- Only one holiday is federal in Germany: the Day of German Unity on 3 October. Everything else is decided by the sixteen Länder — Bavaria keeps the most, Berlin added International Women’s Day — which is why so many rows below are marked regional.
- There is no substitution rule: a holiday that falls on a weekend is simply lost that year, which makes German long-weekend planning very sensitive to the calendar.
- Watch for Brückentage — bridge days: a Thursday holiday plus a Friday of leave is the standard German long-weekend move, and the table below shows exactly where those are.
