- France has eleven national public holidays. Alsace and Moselle keep two more — Good Friday and 26 December — a legacy of the region’s German period, and those appear as regional rows.
- There is no statutory substitution: a holiday on a weekend is lost. The French answer is the pont — bridging a Tuesday or Thursday holiday into a four-day weekend with a day of leave.
- May is the dense month: 1 May, 8 May, and usually Ascension all land there, and some years Whit Monday too.
