Why every year has one
In any year the twelve 13ths land on all seven weekdays — every one of them, without exception. That is not luck: the gaps between the 13ths are the month lengths, and 31, 30, 28 and 29 days leave remainders of 3, 2, 0 and 1 when divided by 7. Adding those remainders up across a year steps through all seven weekdays exactly, in both common and leap years. Since every weekday is covered, a Friday is unavoidable. The open question is not whether one happens but how many: one, two or three, never none and never four.
In this stretch, 2026 and 2037 have three. Three requires the months to sit exactly thirteen weeks apart, which happens in a common year starting on a Thursday — February, March and November — or a leap year starting on a Sunday, giving January, April and July. No other arrangement fits, which is why three-occurrence years are the minority: about one year in seven.
The 13th is more often a Friday than anything else
Over a full 400-year Gregorian cycle the 13th of the month falls on a Friday 688 times — more than on any other weekday, which each get between 684 and 687. The margin is tiny, but it is real, and it is a consequence of the leap-year rule that skips century years not divisible by 400. The superstition is older than that arithmetic and unrelated to it; the calendar is simply obliging.
