How holidays work in United Kingdom

The United Kingdom calls them bank holidays, and the list differs by nation: England and Wales usually have eight, Scotland nine and Northern Ireland ten, with days such as St Andrew’s Day or Orangemen’s Day appearing in only one of them.
When a bank holiday falls at a weekend, a substitute weekday is declared — that substitute is the date shown here.
Extra one-off holidays are proclaimed for royal occasions; those appear in the data for the year they are announced.
