How holidays work in India

India has exactly three national holidays anchored in the constitution’s civic calendar — Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August) and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October). They are the only days off that apply to the whole country, and they are what this page and the generator mark.
Everything else works on lists: the central government publishes gazetted holidays (mandatory for its offices) and restricted holidays (each employee picks a small number) every year, and every state issues its own list on top.
The great festivals — Diwali, Holi, Eid, Onam, Durga Puja — follow lunar and lunisolar calendars, land on different dates each year and differ by state, which is why an honest national list stays short instead of guessing.
