- Federal holidays bind federal offices, banks and the post; no federal law obliges a private employer to close or to pay premium rates, so company holiday lists routinely differ from this one.
- States add their own days — Texas, Massachusetts or Missouri each observe holidays the rest of the country does not. Rows marked regional below are of that kind.
- When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday it is observed on the Friday before, and on Sunday it moves to the Monday after. The observed date is what this page and the calendar print.
