How these are counted
- Working days = Monday-to-Friday weekdays minus nationwide public holidays that fall on one.
- Regional holidays are left out on purpose — a Bavarian or Québécois day off does not apply to the whole country. Where they matter to you, the country page says so.
- Countries with weekend-substitution rules (the US, UK, Japan, Serbia and others) lose more weekdays to holidays than countries where a weekend holiday is simply gone — that is most of the spread in the table.
- India counts only its three national holidays; state holidays would lower its number regionally.
- Some governments publish an official production calendar each year that moves rest days around — Russia is the clearest example. Where that decree is published we include the transferred days; for years where it is not out yet, the figure is a weekday-minus-holiday count and the country page says so.
