- Counts use nationwide holidays only — regional ones (a state day in the US, a cantonal day in Switzerland) reduce the total further where they apply.
- Weekends are Saturday and Sunday. Half-day customs — a Christmas Eve afternoon, a Bayram eve — are not subtracted.

- Japan runs a substitute-holiday rule — furikae kyūjitsu: when a national holiday falls on a Sunday, the next working day becomes a holiday. The observed dates are what this page shows.
- The Happy Monday System moved several holidays to Mondays on purpose — Coming of Age Day, Marine Day, Respect for the Aged Day and Sports Day — to manufacture three-day weekends.
- Golden Week stacks four holidays between 29 April and 5 May; with the substitution rule it regularly produces the country’s longest break, and any weekday gap in it becomes a de facto bridge day.
